NEW YEAR'
THE VIENNALE
Vienna's annual international film festival, the 'fringe-like' Viennale, is the highlight of the city's celluloid cal-
endar. For two weeks from mid-October public cinemas screen works ranging from documentaries to short and
feature films. Ticket sales commence on the Saturday before the festival begins. You can book by credit card,
online or via a special hotline number that is published on the website www.viennale.at once sales begin. Tickets
can be picked up at any of the booths set up around town, such as the Viennale main booth MAP
GOOGLE MAP (MuseumsQuartier, cnr Mariahilfer Strasse;
10am-8pm;
Museumsquartier), once sales
begin.
Sleeping
From palatial abodes to swanky minimalism, from youth hostels to luxury establishments
like the Hotel Imperial and Hotel Sacher, where chandeliers, antique furniture and origin-
al 19th-century oil paintings are the norm rather than the exception, Vienna's lodgings
cover it all. In between are homely Pensionen (B&B/guesthouses) and less ostentatious
hotels, plus a small but smart range of apartments, many of which can be rented for only
a few nights.
Standards remain high, and generally so do prices; bargains are few and far between. A
private bathroom and breakfast (normally a continental buffet) are invariably included in
the price, but parking isn't, costing anything between €6 and €30 per 24 hours.
