WORTH A TRIP
THERME WIEN
Rest museum-weary feet or escape the city for a day at Therme Wien ( 680 09; www.thermewien.at ; 11,
Kurbadstrasse 14; adult/child 3-hour ticket €16/10, day ticket €23/14; 9am-10pm Mon-Sat, 8am-10pm Sun;
; 67 Oberlaa-Therme Wien). In Austria's largest thermal baths the water bubbles pleasantly at 27°C to
36°C and jets, whirlpools, waterfalls and grottolike pools pummel and swirl you into relaxation. Besides a jig-
saw of indoor and outdoor pools, there is an area for kids, a sauna complex, as well as gardens with sun loun-
gers, outdoor massage and games like volleyball and boules for warm-weather days. The best way to reach the
thermal baths is by taking U1 to Reumannplatz, then catching tram 67 to Oberlaa-Therme Wien.

MUSEUM
(Imperial Coach Collection; www.kaiserliche-wagenburg.at ; 13, Schloss Schönbrunn; adult/under 19yr €6/free;
9am-6pm Apr-Oct, 10am-4pm Nov-Mar) The Wagenburg displays carriages ranging from tiny chil-
dren's wagons up to sumptuous vehicles of state, but nothing can compete with the
coronation carriage of Emperor Franz Stephan (1708-65). Weighing in at 4000kg and
dripping in ornate gold plating, it has Venetian glass panes and painted cherubs.
Kirche am Steinhof
( 910 60-11 204; 14, Baumgartner Höhe 1; admission €2, tours €8; 4-5pm Sat, noon-4pm Sun, tours 3-4pm
Sat, 4-5pm Sun; 47A, 48A Baumgartner Höhe) Situated in the grounds of the Psychiatric Hospit-
al of the City of Vienna, Kirche am Steinhof, built from 1904 to 1907, is the remarkable
achievement of Otto Wagner. Kolo Moser chipped in with the mosaic windows, and the
roof is topped by a copper-covered dome that earned the nickname Limoniberg (Lemon
Mountain) for its original golden colour.
It's a bold statement in an asylum that has other art nouveau buildings, and it could
only be pushed through by Wagner because the grounds were far from the public gaze.

PARK
Lainzer Tiergarten
( www.lainzer-tiergarten.at ; 13, Hermesstrasse; 8am-dusk; 60B Hermesstrasse, 60 Hermesstrasse)
At 25 sq km, the Lainzer Zoo is the largest (and wildest) of Vienna's city parks.
The 'zoo' refers to the abundant wild boar, deer, woodpeckers and squirrels that freely in-
habit the park, and the famous Lipizzaner horses that summer here.
