Cycling & Mountain Biking
There's a reason US Olympic cyclists train here. It would take a lifetime to ride every mile
of Colorado's paved paths, fire roads and singletrack, with thin-air mountain passes a
badge of honor. Ski resorts offer jumps and downhill riding with lift service.
Mountain cycling is so epic that you can ride on dedicated bikepaths from Glenwood
Springs to Aspen, and from Vail to Breckenridge. Gondolas, buses and even Lake Dillon
ferries are all outfitted to tote bikes. These mountains have inspired grueling 100-mile bike
races in Leadville and summer racing seasons throughout the state. They've also prompted
many business suits to ditch the car, shave their legs and go full-body spandex on their
asses. The point is, in Colorado cycling is more than exercise. It's lifestyle.
In summer, annual bike tours such as Bicycle Tour of Colorado ( 303-985-1180;
www.bicycletourcolorado.com ) offer supported cycling through scenic routes for a week or more.
It's ideal for cyclists who want a challenge but also the camaraderie of an enthusiastic
group.
Mountain-biking enthusiasts should pick up a copy of The Mountain Biker's Guide to
Colorado by Dan Hickstein.
