CLIMATE CHANGE & TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO2, the main cause of human-induced climate
change. Modern travel is dependent on aeroplanes, which might use less fuel per kilometre per person than most
cars but travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit gases (including CO2) and particles also
contributes to their climate change impact. Many websites offer 'carbon calculators' that allow people to estimate
the carbon emissions generated by their journey and, for those who wish to do so, to off set the impact of the
greenhouse gases emitted with contributions to portfolios of climate-friendly initiatives throughout the world.
Lonely Planet off sets the carbon footprint of all staff and author travel.

Bus
» Greyhound ( www.greyhound.com ) runs cross-country buses between San Francisco and New York via Wyoming,
Denver and Chicago; and between Los Angeles and New York via Las Vegas, Denver and Chicago.
» There are also bus services from other eastern seaboard cities such as Philadelphia and Washington, DC, and southern
cities such as Atlanta and Miami.
» Fares are relatively high and bargain air fares can undercut buses on long-distance routes. On shorter routes it can be
cheaper to rent a car.
» Very long-distance bus trips are often available at bargain prices by 'web only fares' from the Greyhound website.
Car & Motorcycle
» I-70 runs nearly the entire length of the USA, passing through central Colorado.
» I-25 runs north-south from New Mexico through Colorado and ends at a junction with I-90 in northern Wyoming.
Train
» Amtrak ( 800-872-7245; www.amtrak.com ) provides cross-country passenger services between the West Coast
and Chicago. Travelers to or from the East Coast must make connections in Chicago. Amtrak trains service only a few
destinations in Colorado besides Denver.
» At the time of writing, Denver's Union Station, which includes Amtrak, was undergoing renovation.
