In-Depth Information
BEARS
Colorado has black bears, which are smaller than grizzlies and have very few incidences of attacking humans. Still, you
should never get between a mother bear and her cubs. If camping, always hang your food, lock it in a bear-proof canister
or keep it in a closed car. Make noise (whistling, clapping or chatting) when hiking in bear country so you don't surprise
a bear. Don't run if you encounter one - they are fast. Back away slowly and avoid eye contact.
When planning a backpacking trip, make sure you know the park safety regulations. In Rocky Mountain National
Park, campers are required to bring a bear-proof canister to store food, trash and toiletries in. If you don't want to buy
one, they may usually be rented from camping stores.
Insurance
No matter how long or short your trip, make sure you purchase adequate travel insurance before departure.
Also consider coverage for luggage theft or loss and for trip cancellation. If you already have a home-owner's or
renter's policy, see what it will cover and consider getting supplemental insurance to cover the rest. If you've prepaid a
large portion of your trip, cancellation insurance is a worthwhile expense. A comprehensive travel insurance policy that
covers all these things can cost up to 10% of the total cost of your trip.
If you will be driving, it's essential that you have liability insurance. Car-rental agencies offer insurance that covers
damage to the rental vehicle and separate liability insurance, which covers damage to people and other vehicles.
Worldwide travel insurance is available at www.lonelyplanet.com/travel_services . You can buy, extend and claim on-
line anytime - even if you're already on the road.
