Wildlife & the Land
Colorado is a quilt of arid canyons and mesas, with vast unbroken plains and a burly
Rocky Mountain backbone. Much of this extraordinary landscape enjoys some level
of protection and management by local, state and federal agencies, but industry has
had its say, too. In the early years mining took its toll. Today oil and gas development
via the practice of fracking has become a point of contention for public health. The
other major issue is that we may be loving Colorado to death, as population growth
and ski-resort developments encroach on natural habitats.
