Happy-Hour Dining
Those coming from out of state might not suspect how seriously Coloradans take their
happy hour. Indeed, for those who want to beat the bluebirds the next morning to ride 50
miles before work, the only option for socializing is to do it early. The tradition is savored
by students, professionals and everyone in between.
Because happy hour is so popular, restaurants compete fiercely and offer incredible
deals. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Colorado's fine-dining establishments, which
may be out of reach for many during dinner hour, but offer incredible small-plate deals dur-
ing happy hour that are cheaper than the local pizzeria - and far more lively.
Limited, discounted happy-hour menus are offered in pubs and restaurants between
around 3:30pm and 6pm (sometimes until 7pm). Go on the early end to get a table. Check
restaurant websites for details. Few offer weekend deals, though some spots offer late-night
happy hours from 10pm until close during the week.
In Denver we love happy hour at Steuben's. Old Boulder standbys the Med and Jax have
competition from Salt and Cafe Aion. You will also find a thriving tradition in every ski
town, pub and brewhouse in the state.
BREAKFAST BURRITO
Nobody would actually sell these hot missiles in Mexico, but no matter. The breakfast burrito is one Mexican-in-
spired food group mastered far and wide here. It's served in diners and Jewish delis in Denver, in ski-punk coffee
shops and straight from a bus in Leadville. Packed with protein (eggs, cheese, beans), fresh veggies and hot salsa,
rolled to go in paper and foil, it may be the perfect breakfast for those on the go. Smuggle it onto the gondola, grind
it in the car, hell, store it in your purse (but not for too long).
