In-Depth Information
The discovery of gold in 1859 brought more miners and pioneers, among them Barney
Ford, an escaped slave and would-be millionaire. Not long after the Pony Express blazed
the Overland Trail through the Pawnee Grassland to deliver the US mail, Confederate
families came this way post-Civil War, planting sugar beets in northeast Colorado.
The Denver Mint struck and minted its first gold and silver coins on February 1, 1906. It is the largest
producer of coins in the world. The mint was robbed of $200,000 in broad daylight on 18 December,
1922.
