In-Depth Information
South Crestone Lake Trail
( Jun-Oct) Hikers on the South Crestone Lake Trail travel 4.5 miles to South Crestone
Lake, in a cirque beneath Mt Adams (13,931ft). This prime bighorn sheep habitat harbors
more than 500 sheep that range between Hermit and Music Passes. There are several
campsites on this trail.
Begin from the top of Galena St above the post office and follow the road for a little
over 2 miles to the trailhead. An alternate hike from this trailhead is the 9.5 mile hike to
Willow Lake (and waterfall), used as a basecamp for those looking to summit Kit Carson
and Challenger Point.

( Jun-Oct) The North Crestone Trail leads to either the North Crestone Lake below Fluted

Venable Passes ( Click here ) .
From the North Crestone Campground USFS Trail 744 follows the north side of North
Crestone Creek for 1.5 miles to a three-way junction: on your right the southernmost trail
continues for 3 miles to North Crestone Lake; the middle trail, USFS Trail 746, passes
north of Comanche Peak before dropping into the Wet Mountain Valley on USFS Trail
1345; and the northern choice, USFS Trail 747, heads toward Venable Pass.

Spiritual Retreats & Classes
For the most part, it takes extensive advance planning to make a spiritual retreat or stay in
Crestone, but a wide spectrum of faiths offer dormitory accommodations and seminars for
visitors. Many of the spiritual centers also have drop-in classes, and prayer and meditation
services.
Sleeping & Eating
North Crestone Campground
(Alder Terrace Rd; tent sites $10; May-Nov) Thirteen campsites are available about 2 miles north
of Crestone, past the town center on Alder Terrace Rd. They're first-come, first-served
and fill up in a blink on summer weekends. If you can't get here on a weekday, make sure
you research a backup BLM (Bureau of Land Management) option ahead of time or pre-
pare to head into the backcountry.
