San Luis
POP 800 / ELEV 7965FT
Tucked into the far southeast margin of the San Luis Valley is the town of San Luis, which
happens to be Colorado's oldest settlement (1851). It largely escaped the 'progress' that
revoked Hispanic tenure in other parts of the valley following the arrival of the railroad;
today the town remains almost 90% Hispanic, a harbor of cultural diversity among Color-
ado's largely white population. It's an appealing, friendly place, worth a detour for those
who want to experience the scenic, slow pace of the deep San Luis Valley.
