In-Depth Information
San Luis State Park
This state park is a patch of bleak terrain on the edge of the Great Sand Dunes National
Park, where dunes covered with saltbush and rabbitbrush stand in contrast to the grassy
wetlands - the secondary beneficiary of this governmental largesse. Waterfowl, shorebirds
and birdwatchers enjoy the recently restored wetlands.
The Mosca Campground ( 719-378-2020; www.parks.state.co.us ; Lane 6 N; campsites $20, daily vehicle fee
$7; May-Sep; ) has a bathhouse, laundry and drinking fountains and is a convenient al-
ternative to camping in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, though the park is only open
for camping between May and the end of September. The park is 8 miles west of Hwy 150
on Alamosa County Ln 6N. To get from Alamosa to the park, drive 13 miles north on
Hwy 17, then turn right (east) on County Ln 6N for 8 miles.

Alamosa

In the heart of the San Luis Valley, Alamosa (Spanish for cottonwood) is the largest town
in the valley, thanks mostly to a small university, Adams State College. From the highway,
its car garages and Mexican joints aren't so different to other towns in the valley, but the
students bring some life to its restaurants and bars. Its greatest appeal for travelers is its
convenience as an overnight stop for visiting nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park or
riding the excellent Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad steam train from Antonito to the
south.
Main St, with its small walking district, runs parallel to US 160, one block north of the
highway. It's far more enjoyable to approach downtown on foot by walking along the
river. The river walk starts at the information depot in Cole Park and offers views of
Blanca Peak and a stroll through tree-lined neighborhood streets to the downtown area.
Paths follow the Rio Grande on both banks from the information depot, but most walkers
and joggers will prefer the wide, well-drained levee on the east side.
