mile down a well-graded dirt road off Hwy 350. Walking along the ruts, with the dry wind
in your hair, it's easy to imagine the challenges that traders and settlers faced.

west of Timpas.
Picketwire Dinosaur Tracksite
Also in the Comanche National Grassland, but only accessible by organized tour, or on
foot, is a whole different kind of tracksite. This one is all about the migration of dinosaurs.
The quarter-mile Picketwire Dinosaur Tracksite ( 719-384-2181; www.recreation.gov ; 1420 E 3rd St;
adult/child $15/10.50; by reservation, May-Jun & Sep-mid-Oct) is the largest documented site of its
kind in North America, with as many as 1300 visible dinosaur tracks. Some 150 million
years ago, two types of dinosaurs, Allosaurus and Apatosaurus ( Brontosaurus ), migrated
along the muddy shoreline of a large prehistoric lake.
You must reserve a guided auto tour through La Junta Ranger District if you intend to
drive. You can also hike from the Withers Canyon trailhead, which is an 11.3-mile round-
trip hike along Picketwire Canyon Trail to the dinosaur prints.
