or of local cowboy artist, and the original, if unofficial, town historian, AR Mitchell . Set
in a late-19th-century department store (those tiled ceilings are original), the ground floor
is the permanent collection of Mitchell's work: cowboys, horses, Western landscapes,
more horses and more cowboys.
Upstairs, there's a rotating exhibition space, and the basement has a terrific collection
of historic Trinidad photos. There are Mitchell pieces for sale along with turquoise jew-
elry and quirky cowboy gifts in the adjacent gift shop.
MUSEUM
Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum
(600 Prospect St; 10am-3pm Mon-Thu) This small museum is located on the campus of
Trinidad State Junior College, north of I-25. It's only one room and the exhibits could do
with some more context, but it's nonetheless a quick intro to the area's geology and pre-
history. In addition to fossils and artifacts, there's even a mammoth tusk.
MUSEUM
Ludlow Massacre Memorial
(Colorado County Rd 44) In 1914 striking migrant workers were living in a large tent city
in Ludlow. After a series of conflicts, the Colorado National Guard were called in. An en-
suing clash saw the tent city razed, resulting in the deaths of 21 people - including two
women and 11 children. This well-executed stone monument, just north of Trinidad, was
dedicated by the United Mine Workers to tell the story.
Displays include testimonials of those involved with the strike and tent camp, and a
timeline of the mine workers' struggle. There's also a display about company towns, a
practice used by management to create a climate of indentured servitude.
