In-Depth Information
Aside from those in Moab, Utah, the singletrack rides around Fruita are the best in the
West - drawing serious enthusiasts from afar. The dry, mild high-desert climate allows for
a long riding season that stretches from late April to mid-November.
You can ride 142 miles of dirt to Moab on the Kokopelli Trail, but there's tons of op-
tions in two areas near town: the 18 Road area, more suited to beginners, and the Koko-
pelli area trails, best for high-intermediates and experts. Maps are available at Fruita's
bike shops.
Over the Edge Sports
( www.otefruita.com ; 202 E Aspen Ave; bicycle rental $50-80; 9am-6pm) This is the shop that put Fruita
on the map. A full-service bike shop offering guided rides like the Kokopelli Trail, it con-
tinues to advocate for responsible trail use.

10am-4pm Mon-Sat & from noon Sun Oct-Apr; ) Situated between Grand Junction and Fruita, this
small museum is a fantastic collection of grizzly animatronic dinos that snort steam and
jerk around, bestial skeletons and interesting multimedia demonstrations. It's a little bit
corny at times, but thrilling for the younger members of the party.

Fruita Paleontological Area
( www.blm.gov ; Horsethief Rd, off Kings View Rd; dawn-dusk) Maybe it's the desolation of the
dry, rumbling country; maybe it's the lack of anything man-made in your view. Whatever
the reason, it seems entirely possible to imagine dinosaurs roaming Fruita Paleontological
Area. A half-mile loop trail leads past good interpretive signs explaining the six types of
dinosaurs found here during 100 years of off and on excavation.
