Paonia
POP 1427 / ELEV 5674FT
A worthy stop between Carbondale and Montrose, rural Paonia has the right mix of quirk,
calm and Wild West tradition. The city's founder wanted to name the town 'Paeonia,' the
Latin name for the peony flower, but according to local legend an austere postmaster
wouldn't allow the city moniker to have so many vowels.
For its size, Paonia offers a surprising combination of natural beauty, working-class so-
ciety and liberal culture. It's the home of High Country News , one of the country's most
outspoken environmental publications. Surrounded by farms and wildlands, it also has
some late-19th-century buildings in superb condition. Coal mining is still a significant
local industry. Today, most of its residents are a mix of coal miners, farmers (also cultivat-
ing the state's newest cash crop - pot) and boomers gone off the grid.
The historic downtown - all 10 or so blocks of it - is just south of the highway. As you
descend into the valley of the North Fork River, the Grand Mesa flanking one side and Mt
Lamborn towering on the other, Hwy 133 runs right through town.
