Delta
POP 8780 / ELEV 4890FT
Once known as Uncompahgre, Delta is the gateway to the north rim of Black Canyon of
the Gunnison National Park. It's a small crossroads town that travelers to southwest Col-
orado can hardly miss, though in recent times its population has doubled. It's also home to
a large state prison, which along with a number of empty storefronts, may lend to the
town's general lack of cheer. It's worth checking out the lovely postwar-style murals along
Main St, which depict the region's agricultural tradition.
Sights & Activities
Dry Mesa Dinosaur Quarry
( 970-874-6638; Uncompahgre National Forest; ) Within the borders of the Uncompah-
gre National Forest, this bone-rich area yielded one of the most diverse Jurassic vertebrate
collections in the world. Over a dozen different dinosaurs have been unearthed here since
the first dig in 1971, including the terrifying Torvosaurus and various birds, crocodiles
and mammals.
Currently, the quarry is southeast of town, along Escalante Creek. The location of the
quarry will vary because the dig remains ongoing. For more information about the visit,
inquire at the USFS forest station. A short hike will also bring you to a Ute rock-art site.
DINOSAUR SITE
Fort Uncompahgre
( 970-874-7566; 205 Gunnison River Dr; admission $3; 9am-3pm Apr-Sep; ) Delta's history as a
