There's a re-created Old West town replete with storefonts, a saloon, drugstore and doc-
tor's surgery. The original Diehl Carriage Works building is where 1919-26 world heavy-
weight boxing champion Jack Dempsey trained.

BMX
BMX Complex

complex is located at the Montrose County Fairgrounds. The local BMX community is
very welcoming to new and visiting riders.
CYCLING
Fishing
This area offers some of the best trout fishing in the US. The Gunnison River has been
designated Gold Medal Waters and the Uncompahgre River, which flows through Mon-
trose, offers outstanding year-round angling. Anglers must have a license and comply with
local regulations and bag limits. (Rainbow trout are strictly catch-and-release.) There are
several companies that can get you kitted out and onto the water.

provides customized guided fly-fishing tours to the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers
and beyond.

The great variety here ranges from simple strolls to more challenging overnight hikes and

Mountain Biking
Surrounded by wonderful and varied landscapes, and with a network of cycling trails in
and around town, mountain bikers are spoilt for choice. For more challenging mountain
biking head out on Hwys 50 and 347 for the Black Canyon and ride along the paved edge
