al food, the funky-casual Secret Stash is adored by locals, who also dig the original cock-
tails. The sprawling space was once a general store, but is now outfitted with teahouse
seating and tapestries. The house specialty is pizza; its Notorious Fig (with prosciutto,
fresh figs and truffle oil) won the World Pizza Championship. Start with the salt and pep-
per fries.

One of the favorite après-ski venues, Avalanche is right on the slopes and has a big menu
of American comfort foods (tuna melts, burgers, club sandwiches, pizzas) as well as an
impressive lineup of desserts, beverages and a kids' menu.
Bacchanale

ado beef, polenta fries and fresh pastas, this is the original fine-dining restaurant in Cres-
ted Butte, revamped in lovely minimalist style. In addition to Italian staples, there's a
good selection of veggie sides and cured meats and cheeses to start. Save room for
chocolate budino and strawberries in balsamic caramel. The kids' menu is good too.

Soupçon

cializing in seduction, this petite French bistro occupies a characterful old mining cabin
with just a few tables. Chef Jason has worked with big NYC names and keeps it fresh
with local meat and organic produce. Reserve ahead.

Montanya
(130 Elk Ave; snacks $3-12; 11am-9pm) The original Montanya distillery has moved here, with
wide acclaim. Its basiltini, made with basil-infused rum, fresh grapefruit and lime, will
have you levitating. It also offers tours, free tastings and worthy mocktails.
Camp 4 Coffee
( www.camp4coffee.com ; 402 1/2 Elk Ave; 5am-midnight) Grab your caffeine fix at this serious local
roaster, the cutest cabin in town, shingled with license plates (just as local miners once did
when they couldn't afford to patch their roofs).
