) Installed in the original 1902 San Juan County Jail, the Silverton Museum has an in-
teresting collection of local artifacts and ephemera.

Mayflower Gold Mill

30; ) This mill was once a major employer in Silverton. The Aerial Tram House is a
highlight of the self-guided tour.

Silverton Mountain Ski Area

Not for newbies, this is one of the most innovative ski mountains in the US - a single lift
takes advanced and expert backcountry skiers up to the summit of an area of ungroomed
ski runs. Numbers are limited and the mountain designates unguided and the more exclus-
ive guided days.
The lift rises from the 10,400ft base to 12,300ft. Imagine heli-skiing sans helicopter.
You really need to know your stuff - the easiest terrain here is comparable to skiing
double blacks at other resorts.
Kendall Mountain Recreation Area

Dec-Feb; ) Managed by the town, with just one double 1050ft chairlift and four runs, all
of them suitable for beginners. People goof around on sleds and tubes. It's cheap and
family-friendly. Skis, tubes, sleds and snowboards can be rented from the Kendall Moun-
tain Community Center.

Old Hunded Gold Mine Tour

hugely popular. A tram travels a third of a mile into a tunnel where passengers alight and
