True Grit were filmed at this appropriately named cafe and watering hole. It's a kind of
shrine to John Wayne, with pictures and memorabilia hung on the walls. Quarter-pound
burgers, tasty chicken and fried steaks are served, and a crackling fire warms patrons in
the winter.

(602 Clinton St; pizzas $10; 4-9pm Tue-Sun) Baking goat's-cheese pizzas with fennel sausage and
serving craft beer by the barrel, congenial Colorado Boy is a boon to locals, who rush to
claim the outdoor picnic tables early. Wash the artisan pizza down with the house-brewed
Irish Red, with caramel and toffee notes, or a Mexican Coke.

Ouray & the Million Dollar Highway

With gorgeous icefalls draping the box canyon and soothing hot springs dotting the valley
floor, Ouray (you-ray) is one privileged place, even for Colorado. For ice climbers, it's a
world-class destination, but hikers and 4WD fans can also appreciate its rugged and some-
times stunning charms. The town is a well-preserved quarter-mile mining village sand-
wiched between imposing peaks.
Between Silverton and Ouray, US 550 is known as the Million Dollar Hwy. Some cred-
it the name to roadbed rich in valuable gold ore. Others say it cost $1 million per mile to
build. The whole of US 550 has been called the Million Dollar Hwy, but more properly
it's the amazing stretch of road south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge up to Red
