The USFS Aspen Ranger District operates twenty-some campgrounds and covers Roaring
Fork Valley and from Independence Pass to Glenwood Springs, including the Maroon
Bells Wilderness. Come here for maps and hiking tips.

Getting There & Away
Aspen is 41 miles south of Glenwood Springs on Hwy 82. From Denver, Aspen is 200
miles via I-70 and Hwy 82. The road to Aspen via Independence Pass is only open from
late May to early November.
Aspen-Pitkin County Airport ( 970-920-5380; www.aspenairport.com ; 233 E Airport Rd; ) Four miles
northwest of Aspen on Hwy 82, this surprisingly spry airport has direct flights from Den-
ver, Los Angeles, Dallas and Chicago. Several car-rental agencies operate here. Roaring
Forks Transportation Authority also runs a twice hourly free bus to and from the airport.

) Colorado Mountain Express runs frequent shuttles to/from the Denver International
Airport (four hours). It also offers local shuttle services.
Getting Around
It should come as no surprise that street parking in Aspen is both expensive and a head-
ache. If you're just up for the day, or if your hotel doesn't have parking spots (it happens),
save yourself the trouble and head straight for the town parking garage (per hour/day
$1.50/15) next to the visitor center on Rio Grande Pl. Skiers not staying in Aspen gener-
ally go to the free Park-and-Ride lot on Brush Creek Rd, which is opposite the turnoff for
Snowmass off Hwy 82. The free shuttles here serve all mountains.
High Mountain Taxi ( 970-925-8294; www.hmtaxi.com ; airport to/from Aspen $19-30; 24hr) Serves the
airport and offers Aspen-area metered fare services 24 hours a day. Taxis seat up to six
people and are equipped with child seats.
Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA; 970-925-8484; www.rfta.com ; 430 E Durant Ave;
6:15am-2:15am) RFTA buses connect Aspen with the Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk
via free shuttles, as well as the down-valley towns of Basalt ($4, 30 minutes), Carbondale
