Activities
Aspen, for all it's money, taste and eccentricity, owes its current status to the surrounding
slopes. Above all, this is a ski town and one of the best in America, with four mountains
accessible from a single lift ticket - each offering a different flavor and an adventurous
twist. But downhill is not the town's only gift.
Indeed, to come all the way to Aspen in summer or fall and not set foot in the stunning
backcountry would be a veritable travesty. The most popular place to explore - and justifi-
ably so - is the breathtaking Maroon Bells area, but there are plenty of other options. Lis-
ted here are several of Aspen's classic hikes and bike rides, but be sure to visit the ranger
office ( Click here ) for more in-depth advice and maps. The best season for hiking is from
mid-June to late October; earlier is doable, but you should expect deep snow cover in
places, particularly higher up.
