WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Once gold was discovered in the Pikes Peak and Idaho Springs areas in the late 1850s, it didn't take long for pro-
spectors to make their way to Summit County. George Spencer officially founded the town of Breckenridge in
November 1859 as something of a market town and base camp to support, and profit from, the efforts of miners
in the local mountains.
Spencer originally named the town 'Breckinridge' after the sitting vice president, John C Breckinridge of Ken-
tucky. It was sheer flattery, of course. Spencer wanted a post office, and politicians being politicians, he was re-
warded with the first post office between the Continental Divide and Salt Lake City, UT. But when the Civil War
broke out in 1861, and the vice president became a brigadier general in the Confederate army, the decidedly pro-
Union citizens of Breckinridge decided to change the town's name. An 'i' was changed to an 'e', and the place
became Breckenridge forever after.
Festivals & Events
Quirky parades, feats of athletic, creative and culinary agility and ingenuity, and plenty of
night music: Breckenridge knows how to throw a party.
