BRECKENRIDGE SKI TIPS
Thanks to the long and relatively flat green runs on Peaks 8 and 9, the Breckenridge Ski Area has always been
known as a great family mountain and a terrific place to learn. But if you're ready to step it up a notch, don't fret
- there are plenty of adrenaline-addled diversions higher up on the resort's five towering peaks.
The one experience experts won't want to miss is a ride on the highest chairlift in North America, the Imperial
Express (12,840ft). This drops you off just below the summit of Peak 8 , from where you can traverse north along
the ridge to Whale's Tail and Peak 7 Bowl , or steel yourself for the short, steep and lung-crushing hike up to the
true summit (don't drop your gear!), where the views and terrain are simply spectacular. From here you can drop
into the Imperial Bowl or the extreme Lake Chutes .
A favorite intermediate or 'blue' run is Cashier on Peak 9. Long, mellow and not too technical, it's a place to
refine your skills and practice your jib tricks. It's also not a bad spot to make the switch from skis to snowboard.
Another great intermediate run on Peak 7 is Wire Patch , featuring a series of 'rollers' - mini-hills, not moguls. In
2013, the resort opened Peak 6 to skiers, adding access to three new bowls, two of which offer high-alpine inter-
mediate terrain.
There's a favorite expression around Breck: 'There's no friends on powder days.' And you certainly won't
catch locals waiting around for anyone when it starts dumping. They'll be skiing through the forest on the south
side of Peak 10 , where the tree runs are legendary.
In case of emergency, make sure you have the ski patrol number (
970-496-7294) entered in your phone.

Winter Sports
When Main St is at 9600ft and the peaks are so plentiful the founders went with numbers
over names, you know the skiing is going to be absurdly good. In winter, which starts
early here, it's all about the snow. If you're up for some backcountry travel, Boreas Pass
Rd ( Click here ) is a good spot to strap on the snowshoes or cross-country skis. It's 6.4
miles from the parking lot (at the winter road- closure point) to the pass, and there are oth-
er trails up here.
