Keystone Resort
POP 1079 / ELEV 9280FT
In operation since 1970, Keystone is a family oriented resort on the Snake River, 5 miles
east of Dillon on US Hwy 6. Keystone is definitely a resort, in that almost all accommod-
ations, restaurants and services are owned and operated by a single company (that would
be the eerily ubiquitous Vail Resorts). As a result, while the base area lacks the character
and variety of nearby Breckenridge, Keystone has been well planned and it is easy to
book reservations and get information. The main base area is known as River Run Village;
a second base area is Mountain House, which serves true beginners and is less crowded.
Although you can access some 100 miles of bike trails from Keystone, it's essentially a
ghost town in summer.
Activities
The big draw is the ski area ( www.keystoneresort.com ; Hwy 6; adult/child $110/64; 8:30am-4pm Nov-mid-
Apr, to 8pm most days Dec-Mar) , which encompasses three mountains and offers the most terrain
in all of Summit County. Although it pegs itself as a family resort - and indeed, if you
book two nights or more of resort lodging, kids 12 and under ski free - there's a lot of
variety here. Beginners will love long cruisers like Schoolmarm (3.5 miles) and the
slightly more challenging Spring Dipper, while experts can burn their quads on over 70
black diamond runs. The A51 Terrain Park is decked out with an array of jumps, jibs, rails
and a Superpipe, while snowcats ( 970-496-4386; rides from the Outback $5; all-day tours $240) take the
daring above the lifts to a string of powder-filled bowls at the summit. It's also the only
big Colorado resort to offer night skiing , which often attracts folks from Breck. Keystone lift
passes are good at Breck and A-Basin, and if you buy a pass of three days or longer, you
also get access to Vail.
The resort also operates a small Nordic Center ( 970-496-4275; www.keystoneresort.com ; 155 River
Course Dr; adult/child $11/free; 9am-4:40pm Dec-mid-Apr) at the western end (near Dillon), with 9
miles of groomed trails and a tubing hill for kids.
Sleeping
Keystone has six main village areas, all of which offer a variety of condo-style lodging
booked through the resort. A free shuttle system serves all villages in winter. The Keystone
