Frisco
POP 2683 / ELEV 9097FT
It's almost startling to find such a cute turn-of-the-20th-century mining town, set high in
the Rockies, ringed by peaks wooded and bald, and with another vast sculpted range flex-
ing all the way to Breckenridge. It startles not because it's strange to find such a soothing,
tempting setting in the central Rockies, but rather because Frisco stands alone, flaunting
her 19th-century history, rather than kneeling at the foot of some recently developed ski
resort. Yet it's still within 30 minutes of Vail and 10 to 20 minutes of Loveland, Arapahoe
Basin, Copper Mountain, Keystone and Breckenridge, and the distance means that
lodging and rental gear is cheaper here.
Historic Main St is a six-block stretch where you'll find almost everything you could
need. There are cute inns and tasty dining, and it dead-ends at the scenic Dillon Reservoir
where you'll find a small marina. Romantic and welcoming, with ample free parking year
round, there are a lot of reasons to fall for Frisco.

Frisco Historic Park & Museum
( www.townoffrisco.com ; cnr 2nd Ave & Main St; 10am-4pm Tue-Sat, 10am-2pm Sun; ) Set on the
site of the original town saloon in 1889, and later converted into the town's second school
in 1901, this museum features a number of historical displays, including one on the Ute
nation, a diorama of the original Ten Mile Canyon railroad that fed and connected the
mining camps of Leadville and Frisco, and a historic map of Colorado (c 1873).
The main attractions, however, are the half-dozen old mining cabins scattered out back.
Aficionados of log-construction techniques will appreciate the double-dovetail joints at
the Dills Ranch House (c 1890) and the Bailey House (c 1895). Inside the Trappers Cabin,
