18 The cultural capital of southwest Colorado, Durango ( Click here ) is a lovely town,
rich in history yet elegantly modernized. The historic central precinct dates back to the
1880s, when the town was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Still tastefully
authentic, it's a great base for exploring the San Juan mountains and Mesa Verde National
Park. Think of it as artsy, rootsy and every day more quirky. The Durango & Silverton Nar-
row Gauge Railroad toots and puffs up to Silverton several times daily.
