There are two first-come first-served USFS campgrounds off Hwy 40 on the way into
Winter Park: Robber's Roost (tent & RV sites $16) , which has no water, 5 miles from town, and
Idlewild (tent & RV sites $16) , 1 mile from town.

Rocky Mountain Chalet

) Proof that if you are affordable and reasonably cute, you will be popular among the
budget traveling set. Add in the warm and welcoming staff, sparkling kitchen and interna-
tional crowd and you have a winner in all categories. Both doubles and dorms are avail-
able. It's located in Fraser, just off Hwy 40.
TimberHouse Ski Lodge

) A ski-in hostel? Yes, this groovy wooden mountain lodge is set at the base of the ski
resort on the Billy Woods Trail. Sleep in a four- or six-person dorm, or grab a private
room with shared or private bathroom. Rates include breakfast, dinner, tea and shuttles to
the village. It's very hard to find, so get directions first.

Broome Hut
( 970-925-5775; www.grandhuts.org ; Hwy 40, Mile 240; per bed $35; year-round) The first project in a
new hut-to-hut system that will eventually link up Berthoud Pass with Grand Lake further
north, opening up new terrain for backcountry skiers. Like other backcountry huts, you'll
need to reserve months in advance in winter. Broome Hut is located on the west side of
Berthoud Pass.

Snow Mountain Ranch

) This YMCA center is located 14 miles north of Winter Park off Hwy 40, and is a
great spot to take the kids. A plethora of activities are available year-round, from horse-
back riding and challenge courses to over 60 miles of cross-country trails in the winter
(rental equipment available).
Lodging is tailored to groups (six people to a yurt or dorm room, eight people to a
campsite), so it's best to come with others; you can also visit as part of a day trip.
