(the only place to see fossils protruding from the earth) is in Utah. There are several drives
with scenic overlooks and interpretive signs, leading to a number of trailheads for short
nature walks or access to the backcountry.
At the town of Dinosaur, a Colorado Welcome Center offers maps and brochures for the
entire state. Information is available from Dinosaur National Monument Headquarters Visitor Center
( 970-374-3000; 4545 E Hwy 40; 8am-4:30pm Jun-Aug, only Mon-Fri Dec-Feb) , sometimes called the
Canyon Visitor Center. It has an audio-visual program, exhibits and a bookstore. There's
also a visitors center at Dinosaur Quarry. Entrance to the monument headquarters visitor
center is free, but entrance to other parts of the monument (including Dinosaur Quarry) is
$10 per private vehicle, $5 for cyclists or bus passengers.
Getting There & Away
The monument is 88 miles west of Craig via US 40 and 120 miles east of Salt Lake City,
UT, by I-80 and US 40. Dinosaur Quarry is 7 miles north of Jensen, UT, on Cub Creek Rd
(Utah Hwy 149). Monument headquarters is just off US 40 on Harpers Corner Dr, about 4
miles east of the town of Dinosaur.
