In-Depth Information
CRAIG
POP 9464 / ELEV 6198FT
Lying on the north bank of the Yampa River between the towns of Meeker and Steamboat
Springs, Craig is little more than a pit stop on the way to or from Colorado's northwest
corner. The downtown stands at a junction of roads leading elsewhere: US 40 goes
east-west between Steamboat Springs and Dinosaur National Monument; Hwy 789/13 runs
north through desolate, rolling hills near the Wyoming Border; and 394 follows the Yampa
River south to Meeker.
The main drag is Yampa Ave, but its taxidermy shops, automotive suppliers and liquor
stores offer a fairly grim stroll. There are big box stores and several grocers if you're stock-
ing up for a trip out west.
Sights & Activities
Museum of Northwest Colorado
MUSEUM
( 970-824-6360; www.museumnwco.org ; 590 Yampa Ave; 9am-5pm Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm Sat; )
The hats, chaps and saddles in the cowboy collection are the highlight of this community
museum. But it's the handcrafted and etched spurs and hand-tooled boots that are the most
cherished artifacts. It also has a small bookshop on hand with volumes on local history.
Marcia Car
(cnr E Victory Way & Washington St; 8am-5pm Mon-Fri Jun-Aug; ) This private rail car was
commissioned in 1906 by David Moffat, a prominent Denver banker who owned a number
of gold mines. He was also instrumental in connecting Colorado to the national rail system.
You can arrange tours at the Moffat County Visitors Center.
MUSEUM
Sleeping & Eating
There is a cluster of hotel chains in the west part of town off the intersection where Hwy 13
splits south from US 40. Just west of downtown, on US 40, there is a string of mid-century
motels, but they're fairly hit-and-miss. Prices rise during hunting season, from mid-
September to late November.
