Dave Perri's Guide Service
( 970-725-3531; www.traditionalelkhunt.com ; 8hr of guided fishing for 2 adults $375) A local guide operat-
ing on the Colorado River, Perri is one of the few licensed to work the excellent waters in
the area. Early spring and summer are the busiest time for wading trips. In winter, he leads
week-long hunting trips in the Troublesome Basin Area for elk and mule deer, reached via
a 7- to 10-mile horseback ride.
FISHING, HUNTING
Sleeping & Eating
There's no official campground but tent campers and RVs can take advantage of the shade
and good fishing at Pioneer Park on the north bank of the river, where there's not even
anyone to pester you for money. Get drinking and cooking water from the standpipe
across from the Riverside Hotel near the bridge; there are portable toilets, but to clean up
try the pools at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa.
Canyon Motel
( 888-489-3719; www.canyonmotelcolorado.com ; 221 Byers Ave; d $64-99; ) If you aren't stay-
ing at the hot springs, this roadside motel makes a clean stopover. The rooms are simple,
paneled with pine and extremely clean. Some have kitchens and there's a grill for guests
to use.

Glory Hole Cafe
( 970-725-3237; 512 W Byers Ave; breakfast $5-10; 6am-2pm Wed-Mon; ) Most of the menu is
standard diner fare in lumberjack portions, but the French toast - fluffy, expertly golden
slices smothered in homemade blueberry syrup - is worth a stop. It gets absolutely
slammed for breakfast on the weekends, so come off-hours or be prepared to wait.
