Running from Leadville down the eastern flank of Buena Vista and rocketing
through the spectacular Royal Gorge at Class V speeds, the Arkansas River is the most di-
verse, longest and, arguably, the wildest river in the state. White-water outfitters tend to
gather south of Buena Vista in Salida, where you'll also find the office for the Arkansas
Headwaters Recreation Area (at the northern end of the wildest 99-mile stretch) and down-
river near the Royal Gorge Bridge turn-off in Cañon City.
