ESTES PARK
POP 6402 / ELEV 7522FT
T-shirt shops and ice-cream parlors, sidewalks jammed with tourists and streets plugged
with RVs: welcome to Estes Park, the chaotic outpost at the edge of Rocky Mountain Na-
tional Park.
There's no small irony in the fact that the proximity to one of the most pristine outdoor
escapes in the USA has made Estes Park the kind of place you'll need to escape from.
Those expecting immediate views of the pristine beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park
may be disappointed to find themselves watching brake lights on E Elkhorn Ave, the
town's artery to both park entrances. But it's not all bad. Although the strip malls and low-
rise motels can be unsightly, Estes Park promises every convenience to the traveler, and
during the off-season the place has a certain charm, as the streets quieten down and the
prices of creekside cabins drop.
The massive floods of September 2013 pummeled the town, with most of Main St flood-
ing. Nearly every road leading to town was damaged and it took three weeks to get US 36
open again. Most businesses were able to open shortly after the flood.
