CAMPGROUND $
FEES & PERMITS
For private vehicles, the park entrance fee is $20, valid for seven days. Individuals entering the park on foot, bi-
cycle, motorcycle or bus pay $10 each. All visitors receive a free copy of the park's information brochure, which
contains a good orientation map and is available in English, German, French, Spanish and Japanese. A good op-
tion if you plan to visit any other national parks is to buy an annual National Parks and Federal Recreational
Lands Annual Pass for $80.
Backcounty permits ($20 for a group of up to 12 people for seven days) are required for overnight stays in the
260 designated backcountry camping sites in the park. They are free between November 1 and April 30. Phone
reservations can be made only from March 1 to May 15. Reservations for sites and permits, by snail mail or in
person, are accepted via the Backcountry Office (
970-586-1242; www.nps.gov/romo ; 1000 W Hwy 36,
Estes Park, CO 80517).
A bear box to store your food in is required if you are staying overnight in the backcountry between May and
October (established campsites already have them). These can be rented for around $3 to $5 per day from REI
( Click here ) in Denver or the Estes Park Mountain Shop ( Click here ).
Permits can be obtained in person at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, Kawuneeche Visitor Center, and (in sum-
mer only) at the Longs Peak and Wild Basin ranger stations. Generally speaking, there are always backcountry
sites available.

well as certain trailheads, including Bear Lake and Lawn Lake.
MONEY

Cell phone coverage? Forget it. The only place calls can be made are from public phones
