In-Depth Information
the entire day - if the altitude doesn't slow you down, the scenery should. Note: the un-
paved road to Fourth of July is best left to high-clearance or 4WD vehicles.
North of Nederland, the Brainard Lake Recreation Area has ample parking ($10) and camp-
sites ($19), which always fill up. Brainard Lake itself is ringed by the paved entrance
road. Highlights include the beautiful Lake Isabelle (4.9-mile round-trip) and the abso-
lutely stunning (but mildly arduous) Pawnee Pass (9.1-mile round-trip), an all-day hike or
a good overnight.
For more information on Indian Peaks check out the Nederland Visitors Center ( Click
here ) , which has maps and guidebooks. In the mall, Ace Hardware ( Click here ) also sells
topographic and USGS maps for the Indian Peaks area and issues camping permits (re-
quired June to September 15), as well as hunting and fishing licenses. Camping permits
are also available through the Boulder Ranger District (
303-541-2500; 2140 Yarmouth Ave, Boulder;
8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri summer) .
