AROUND BOULDER
TOP OF CHAPTER
Nederland
POP 1470 / ELEV 8236FT
From Boulder, the devastatingly scenic 17-mile route through Boulder Canyon emerges in
the lively, ramshackle little berg of Nederland, a mountain-town magnet for hippies looking
to get off the grid. These days, Nederland has a sagging, happenstantial quality to its
weather-beaten buildings, which are not without a certain rugged charm. Several worth-
while restaurants and bars feed the hungry skiers and hikers heading to or from Eldora Ski
Area and the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, as well as motorists coming down the Peak to
Peak Hwy.
Sights & Activities
The nearby Indian Peaks Wilderness Area provides ample recreation in summer and winter.
Road cyclists often pedal the route between Boulder and Nederland and some charge on to
the scenic Peak to Peak highway, making Nederland a logical stop. Tin Shed ( Click here )
bike shop has good information about road and mountain-bike routes.
Carousel of Happiness
(20 Lakeview Dr, Nederland Mall; ride $1; 10am-8pm, late May-early Sep; ) This vintage 1910 carousel
with gorgeous wood-carved animals and Wurlitzer music is a real highlight for kids. Pro-
ceeds from the nonprofit organization go to children in need.

Frozen Dead Guy Days
( 303-506-1048; http://frozendeadguydays.org ; early Mar) This macabre, bizarre and wonderful
little festival brings life to Nederland in the early spring. Basically an excuse to parade
through town and drink beer, the festival celebrates Grandpa Bredo Morstoel, a Norwegian
transplant who is cryogenically frozen and held locally in dry ice awaiting reanimation.
