In-Depth Information
Despite the same old American chain stores that dominate Denver's shopping scene, the
city has some excellent independent boutiques scattered throughout its neighborhoods,
posing a problem for serious shoppers who are in Denver without a car. If you are on foot,
the best districts for browsing are LoDo, Cherry Creek, Highlands Sq and South Broad-
way, all of which are walkable areas with lots of appealing shops, some featuring locally
designed clothes, art and housewares.
Most visitors will pass through LoDo, where the crowded and bustling, pedestrian-only
16th St Mall gets a lot of foot traffic. Unfortunately there's not much unique shopping on
the mall beyond the kitschy Western souvenir shops (we're talking dream catchers, buf-
falo statuettes and suspect 'authentic' Native American wares). Just off the mall, the Lar-
imer Sq area along Larimer St has a clutch of high-end boutiques suitable for more dis-
cerning shoppers. The Cherry Creek neighborhood, about 3 miles south of downtown, is
another good place for shoppers to take a stroll. The massive Cherry Creek Shopping
Center towers above the neighborhood - it's Denver's ritziest indoor mall - but a wander
among the blocks to the north will reveal lots of galleries and spendy boutiques. The
South Broadway district, where rents are cheaper, has a unique set of stores catering to al-
ternative tastes and younger crowds. The heart of the neighborhood can be explored on
foot along S Broadway between 1st and Alameda Aves.

( www.tatteredcover.com ; 1628 16th St; 6:30am-9pm Mon-Fri, 9am-9pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun) There are
plenty of places to curl up with a book in Denver's beloved independent bookstore, one of
two locations in the Denver area. Bursting with new and used books, it has a good stock
of regional travel guides and nonfiction titles dedicated to the Western states and Western
folklore and literature.
It also has an on-site cafe, and hosts free film and literature events.
