cheap really matters, then the Denver International Youth Hostel might be the place for
you. It's basic and vaguely chaotic , but has a ramshackle charm and a great downtown loc-
ation. All dorms have attached bathroom facilities and the common area in the basement
has a large-screen TV, library and computers for guests to use.

Curtis

( 303-571-0300; www.thecurtis.com ; 1405 Curtis St; d $159-279; ; 15 RTD) It's like stepping
into a doobop Warhol wonderworld at this temple to postmodern pop culture. Attention to
detail - be it through the service or the decor in the rooms - is paramount at the Curtis, a
one-of-a-kind hotel in Denver.
There are 13 themed floors and each is devoted to a different genre of American pop cul-
ture. Rooms are spacious and very mod without being too out there to sleep. The hotel's re-
freshingly different take on sleeping may seem too kitschy for some - you can get a wake-
up call from Elvis - but if you're tired of the same old international brands, this joint in the
heart of downtown might be your tonic.

Magnolia Hotel

( 303-607-9000; www.magnoliahoteldenver.com ; 818 17th St; r from $149; ) Housed in an old
bank building, this 13-story European-style hotel offers old-world charm, modern amenit-
ies and good value in the heart of downtown. Its super-central location, good deals and bed-
time milk and cookies are three major selling points.
Tasteful, stylish rooms and suites come in a variety of shapes (and prices), although
some are a bit small, with a Western meets Euro flavor. Gym junkies will dig the on-site fit-
ness center.
