Detour
If you have time there are two sites further east of Bent's Old Fort that shed light on
America's dark side. Westward expansion made America, but it meant misery for many.
The Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, just off the Santa Fe Trail north of
Lamar, was a pivotal point in US-Native American relations - an estimated 163 of Chief
Black Kettle's Cheyenne people were massacred here by Colorado Volunteers, after the
Cheyenne encamped in this desolate land in compliance with a recently introduced Amer-
ican law. The event ended the Indian Wars and paved the way for further white settlement
in Colorado and beyond.
South of Lamar are the ruins of Camp Amache, a World War II Japanese internment
camp.
