Detour
To explore something more rugged, detour from Mesa Verde and head southwest of
Cortez to Ute Mountain Tribal Park. It houses a number of lesser-known ruins. Access to
the park is possible only with the accompaniment of a Ute guide. Half- and full-day tours
can include visits to their adjacent reservation. In addition to the cliff dwellings, original
pottery is prevalent; you may even see shards along the trails.
From the state line you can continue your journey on Utah's Trail of the Ancients By-
way or head to other Ancestral Puebloan treasures such Chaco Canyon in New Mexico or
Canyon de Chelly in Arizona.
