When to Go
Accessible year-round. In summer, watch big cumulus clouds rolling lazily over the green
and granite peaks. In fall, the aspens turn the hillsides gold, while winter brings a stark
white landscape.
Detour
To stretch your legs along the way, take the road opposite the turnoff for Ward that leads
up to Brainard Lake. The lake itself is small but enjoys a gorgeous setting and several
great trails. Stop in at the Millsite Inn, just north of the turnoff to Ward. The food is noth-
ing special, but it's an interesting place for a bite and a beer, with plenty of local color,
like local rock bands that channel 1971.
