Trail Ridge Rd
ยป Mileage: 47 miles
Why Go?
This is the highest continuously paved through road in North America, so expect out-
rageous views. Few roads that get up this high are in such good condition, and exploring
tundra trails spotted with wildflowers without having to hike up to this altitude is a treat.
The Route
The signature drive in Rocky Mountain National Park, Trail Ridge Rd (US 34) ascends
over the Continental Divide in a series of switchbacks. On the drive from Estes Park to
Grand Lake, you'll see snowcapped peaks, meandering streams, high-country meadows
dotted with wildflowers in midsummer and, with luck, some wildlife too. Archaeological
evidence collected here suggests that humans transited this way for 6000 years. This former
trade route was used by generations of Ute, Arapaho and Apache people to traverse Milner
Pass. Trail Ridge Rd was originally surveyed in 1927 but not completed until 1932.
When to Go
Trail Ridge Rd opens in late May and is closed at Many Parks Curve on the east side by
mid-October. You're more likely to see dramatic snowy scenery in May, when the pass first
opens.
Worth a Stop
Before driving into the park, stop by the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, the inspiration for
Stephen King's The Shining .
Detour
Consider a 9-mile detour up the original Fall River Rd, where you're likely to spot elk out-
side the Alpine Visitor Center.
