The 1687 Siege
During an attempt to seize the Ottoman-occupied Acropolis, the Venetians gar-
risoned themselves on Filopappos Hill, the perfect strategic location to shell
their target. Too perfect, unfortunately - a shell hit the Parthenon, where the
Turks stored their gunpowder, and the ensuing explosion severely damaged the
Acropolis's prized temple and sculptures.
Tip:
Though perfectly safe during the day, the paths of Filopappos Hill are
best avoided after dark.

There is a pleasant café called the Loumbardiaris in the trees just be-
hind the Church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris.
