In-Depth Information
PLANNING YOUR VISIT
1. PASSPORT AND VISA INFORMATION
Citizens from EU countries (plus Norway and Iceland) need only a valid passport to
enter Greece, and EU nationals can stay indefinitely. Likewise, US, Canadian, Aus-
tralian and New Zealand citizens need only a valid passport for entry, and can stay for
up to 90 days. Remember that a fine will be imposed if you stay longer without obtain-
ing a visa extension. Entry requirements are subject to change. Always check before
travel.
2. WHEN TO GO
In summer, many visitors pass through the city on their way to the islands, though
this is certainly not the best time to visit: it's very hot and packed with foreign excur-
sion groups. Try to come in either late spring or early autumn, when you can expect
mild weather and a more relaxed atmosphere.
3. CLIMATE
Athens is blessed with a typical Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, dry and
sunny, with temperatures between 28°C (83°F) and 40°C (104°F) throughout July.
Winters tend to be mild, with average temperatures ranging from 7°C (44°F) to 13°C
(55°F) throughout January, with a fair amount of rain and even occasional snow.
4. WHAT TO TAKE
In summer, light clothing will suffice, but remember to include items with long sleeves
and either trousers or a skirt so you can cover up respectably for visiting the churches.
Through the rest of the year, you'll need warmer clothing. Be sure to take comfortable
walking shoes.
5. LANGUAGE
Greek is the official language, though many people, especially youngsters and those
working in tourism, speak good English. By and large you shouldn't have any problem
communicating, but learning a few basic Greek words shows good will on your part.
