10. PEDIOU TOU AREOS
The largest park in Athens is green and spacious, although not as densely planted
and lovely as the National Gardens. Despite its size, Pediou tou Areos has more of a
feel of a neighbourhood park, with old ladies sitting on benches and kids riding bikes.
Because of its close proximity to political and intellectual Exarcheia, it is often the
scene of rallies, outdoor concerts and cultural events such as the annual book fair.

17 November 1973
The 1973 students of the Polytechnic are the great heroes of the modern Greek
state. On 17 November 1973, they demonstrated against the junta, which had
been in power since 1967. The uprising was crushed with tanks and guns. But
their courage eventually led to the junta's fall and the country's liberation the
following year.
A Day Around Omonia
Morning
Start at Greece's greatest treasure storehouse: the National Archaeological
Museum . Spend around 90 minutes, making sure to see the Mycenean Treas-
ure, Thira Frescoes and Classical statuary.
When leaving the museum, turn left on Patission, noting the neighbouring
Polytechnic , scene of 1973's historic protests. Outside the building, a marble
figure lies on the ground, memorializing the fallen students.
Turn left on Stournari, and head for Plateia Exarcheia for a frappé and to
watch the punks, anarchists and models go by. In summer, head to Yiantes
for an alfresco lunch.
