In-Depth Information
Figure 2-10. Top: Elements 13 brings this new view, called the Adaptive Grid, where you see only
your photos and no background around them. Bottom: The old Detail view, with info about your
photos displayed beneath their thumbnails. While the Adaptive Grid is more fun for showing off
your photos, you'll probably want to switch to Detail view for much of your actual work, especially
if you use stacks or version sets. In either view, if you click a photo to select it, the Organizer puts a
checkmark in the lower right corner of the thumbnail (circled) so that you can be sure which
photo's info you're seeing in the Tags/Info panel.
WORKAROUND WORKSHOP: AVOIDING THE ORGANIZER ON A PC
People either love the Organizer or they hate it. If you're in the latter group and you have a Win-
dows computer, try to see if you can come to terms with the Organizer, because it does have some
useful features. You'll lose a lot if you give up the Organizer, as it's the only place in Elements
where you get a visual preview of your images before opening them.
If you just can't abide the Organizer, or if you prefer to use a different program like Lightroom or
Windows Live Photo Gallery to organize your photos—or you just like to be disorganized—then
you can sidestep the Organizer. Simply adjust your settings on the Welcome screen as described
on The Welcome Screen so that Elements always takes you to the Editor. Also, in the Save As
dialog box, remember to keep “Include in the Elements Organizer” and version sets turned off
whenever you save a file. (Once you turn off the “Include in the Elements Organizer” setting, it
stays off until you turn it back on, or until you open a photo from the Organizer. You may find
you need to turn it off once every editing session [maybe not, if you're lucky] but you don't have
to keep turning it off every time you save.)
If you want to be extra sure that Elements doesn't interpret any of your photo-related activities as
a call for the Organizer, go to your computer's Control Panel→“System and Secur-
ity”→Administrative Tools→Services and find Adobe Active File Monitor V13. This is a service ,
a small program that always runs in the background when your computer is on, even when Ele-
ments is closed. Click Adobe Active File Monitor, and then go to Action→Properties and set the
“Startup type” option to Disabled.
You don't have to do anything special to create your catalog—Elements creates it automatic-
ally the first time you import photos (and creatively names it My Catalog ). It's possible to
have more than one catalog, but most people don't because you can't search more than one
catalog at a time. If for some reason you want more than one catalog, or if you ever want to
start over with a new catalog, in the Organizer, go to File→Manage Catalogs, and then click
the New button. Enter a name for it, and then click OK.
