Local Life
Charming Tai Ping Shan Street
Tai Ping Shan St, the hub of the old Chinese quarter back when there was racial segregation, has a chill neigh-
bourhood vibe and quaint cafes. But it's best known for its three old temples (B2; 42, 34 & 9 Tai Ping Shan St;
8am-6pm; 26). Pak Sing Ancestral Hall (c 1851), the 'people's temple', was a clinic for Chinese pa-
tients refusing treatment by Western medicine, and a storeroom for bodies awaiting burial in China. Kwun Yum
Temple worships the goddess of mercy. You can ID your Chinese zodiac animal and burn incense for it at Tai Sui
Temple .

MARKET

GOOGLE MAP
Officially named Upper Lascar Row, 'Cat St' is a mini flea market of antiques and curios.
There are authentic items, but most of what you see are fakes or rejects from some fam-
ily's house move. That said, it's an interesting place to browse for gifts and souvenirs. Re-
member to bargain. (
