This Anglican cathedral, built in the shape of a cross, is a relic of Hong Kong's colonial
past. It suffered heavy damage during WWII; after the war the front doors were remade
using timber salvaged from the British warship HMS Tamar, and the beautiful stained
glass was replaced. Enter from Battery Path. (

These 5.6-hectare gardens, which first welcomed visitors in 1864, are a pleasant assembly
of fountains, sculptures, greenhouses, a zoo and some fabulous aviaries. There are hun-
dreds of species of birds in residence, as well as exotic trees, plants and shrubs.

This colonnaded, domed neoclassical building is the former Supreme Court, built in 1912
of granite quarried on Stonecutter Island. Standing atop the pediment is a blindfolded
statue of Themis, the Greek goddess of justice. (8 Jackson Rd, Central;

Until European traders imported opium into Hong Kong, it was an obscure backwater in the Chinese empire. The
British developed the trade aggressively and by the start of the 19th century were trading this 'foreign mud' for
