Practicalities
Metric System The metric system is officially used, but traditional Chinese weights and measures persist at local
markets, including leung (37.8g) and gan (catty; about 605g). There are 16 leung to the gan .
Newspapers & Magazines The local English-language newspapers are the South China Morning Post
( www.scmp.com ) , published daily ($7), and the Standard ( www.thestandard.com.hk ) , published Monday to
Saturday ($6). The Beijing mouthpiece China Daily ( www.chinadaily.com.cn ) prints a Hong Kong English-lan-
guage edition ($6).
Radio Popular English-language stations in Hong Kong are RTHK Radio 3 (current affairs and talk radio; 567AM,
1584AM, 97.9FM and 106.8FM), RTHK Radio 4 (classical music; 97.6FM-98.9FM), RTHK Radio 6 (BBC World
Service relays; 675AM), AM 864 (hit parade; 864AM) and Metro Plus (news; 1044AM).
Time Hong Kong Standard Time is eight hours ahead of GMT; there is no daylight saving time in summer.
TV The two English-language terrestrial stations are TVB Pearl and ATV World.
Business Hours
Top Tip Banks and post offices are closed on Sundays.

Restaurants Smaller eateries from 7am or 8am to 11pm; formal restaurants from 11am to
at least 10pm
Shops 10am or 11am to 9pm or 10pm
Customs Regulations
The duty-free allowance for visitors arriving in Hong Kong (including those coming from
Macau and mainland China) is 19 cigarettes (or 1 cigar or 25g of tobacco) and 1L of spirits.
Apart from these limits there are few other import taxes.
