Shops
Everyone knows Hong Kong as a place of neon-lit retail pilgrimage. This city is
positively stuffed with swanky shopping malls and brand-name boutiques. These
are supplemented by the city's own retail trailblazers and creative local design-
ers.
Clothing
The best place to find designer brands and luxury stores is in the malls. For something
more unique, there are cool independent stores opened by local designers and retailers, es-
pecially in Sheung Wan, Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui. You'll see some brilliant pieces but
the range is limited simply because these places are few and far between. The best hunting
grounds for low-cost garments are the street markets.
Electronics
One of the cheapest places in the world for electronics and digitals, Hong Kong has a pleth-
ora of gadget shops. As a rule of thumb do not buy from street-level shops on Nathan Rd.
The camera shops and computer malls listed in this topic are generally honest, though some
shops in computer malls have been known to sell used items as new.
Antiques
Hong Kong has a rich array of Asian antiques on offer, especially Chinese, but expert re-
productions abound. Serious buyers will restrict themselves to reputable antique shops and
auction houses such as Christie's, especially at its auctions in spring and autumn when
you'll find some excellent authentic pieces.
